We are passionate about inspiring others and helping our community wherever possible, especially during this urgent time in need. Here at Girl and the Sun we are donating $1 from every sale this month to two charities that we feel need extra support this month. One Girl, in honour of International Women’s Day and $1 to GIVIT in light of the devastating flood crisis significantly impacting the Northern NSW region and many areas along the East Coast here in Australia.
Imagine not having the ability to access quality education? One Girl is breaking down barriers for girls around the world in order to create the same rights and opportunities that boys have - no matter their birth place or family income.
One Girl was founded in 2009 by Chantelle Baxter and Dave Dixon after they were exposed to the severe challenges women face daily on a global scale. Sadly, a staggering 132 million girls around the world will be denied an education. Currently only 16% of girls across Sierra Leone will complete their schooling, it is statistics like this that highlight the importance of One Girl’s work.
Educating girls empowers them to increase future income by 10-25% for every year she remains in school. The power of an education not only creates immediate and long term change, but will also aim to break the cycle of poverty.
In 2009, Juliette Wright discovered local charities were overwhelmed with poor-quality items and constantly seeking high-quality products - anywhere from baby clothes for struggling families, to sanitary products for women desperately fleeing abusive relationships. Juliette knew there had to be a one stop avenue to give back and somewhere people in urgent need could secure these items. From there, GIVIT was founded.
Currently there are over 41,500 items in need. All money donated goes back into local businesses, to buy essential items for people sadly affected by the current floods, or another cause you choose to donate to. They strive to help make a difference in peoples lives who are in urgent need of assistance.
A link to both charities have been included below to make direct donations and support these communities. Any contribution big or small will make a huge difference to these.
